It is a wonderful honour to be short listed for an industry award and an enormous sense of achievement to win one. The FHT have been shining a light on therapists for many decades, they understand how prestigious it is to be voted as a winner in any of the categories.
What brings you to this topic?
Are you feeling drawn to working with patients with a cancer diagnosis? Reasons vary and over the years of teaching face to face training and creating online eLearning courses in cancer care, I have met and spoken with over a thousand therapists.
Often a reflexologist is drawn to working in this area through personal life experiences with a loved one who has gone through cancer treatments, or through their own journey with a cancer diagnosis. They may have experienced a lack of support during this time and recognize the need for accessing relaxation and stress relief but have been unable to find reflexologists trained to deliver treatments in cancer care.
I have always been drawn to butterflies, so beautiful and delicate, they are joyful to watch as they spread pollen from flower to flower, propagating new life and growth. I am so aware of their short precious lifespan, with some butterflies living their adult stage as long as 13 months, while others only 24 hours.
On February 19th 2022, we celebrate 3 years since we launched Complementary Therapies in Cancer Care eLearning oncology courses for Massage, Reflexology and Reiki practitioners.
As with any anniversary it allows time for reflection and review.
We are almost at the end of 2021 and I always find this is a good time to reflect and look back on how the year evolved, the good, the different, the surprises and at times the challenges.
Where is your path leading? Do you have a strong pull to what you should be doing? Are you following your life purpose?
We can often resist what is clearly in our hearts, denying it due to a sense of fear or feeling of inadequacy.
‘Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.’ Marianne Williamson
As October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, I thought this would be a good time to discuss how we support our clients.
Complementary Therapies support people through their cancer diagnosis from the initial shock of diagnosis through to the end of their treatments and beyond. For some sadly it will also be through palliative care. Our treatments are known to help alleviate anxiety, reduce stress and improve quality of life.
Since March 2020 our wonderful therapy world has been severely reduced by COVID restrictions and lockdowns. Globally all countries have been affected one way or another, with self-employed therapists experiencing long periods of no income, causing low morale and financial hardship.
Sadly, for some this has resulted in shutting up shop for good. The knock-on effect has seen some excellent and highly experienced therapists and therapy schools cease practice.
It is wonderful to see reflexology supporting patients and carers in hospices, hospitals, cancer support centres and many other healthcare areas all around the world.
Our treatments provide relaxation, me time, reduces anxiety, improves quality of life and rebalances the mind and body when patients are at their lowest ebb.
However, Who Supports You?
